Sardinia - Exploring the East Coast

We have beginning of October 2017 and we are again very lucky. For the second time we have the opportunity to go on a camping trip with our Bulli to Sardinia. In October 2016 it was our very first time on this beautiful island. As we did enjoy it a lot we decided to come back just one year later for another three weeks.

Last year we did explore a lot of the north and west coast. This time we focus primarily on the east coast. This is also because here the weather is much better right now compared to the west coast. Camping outside the main season still has a bit of a paradise as we discovered already. Especially because this year we come one week later and there are a lot less tourists already. Three weeks of sunshine, warm weather, good food and drinks combined with some sport is what we have in mind.

Places We Visited

After a quiet night our ferry arrives in Olbia shortly after 8 am, pretty much on time. By 9 am we are already exploring the streets of Olbia until we find one of the food markets. The market we can highly recommend.

Genoa is our first stop like last year after taking the overnight train again from Vienna to Feldkirch. From Genoa we take a ferry over night to Olbia on Sardinia. Before, however, we stroll around the old harbor.

After stocking up with fresh food we make our way to Cannigione and the close by Camping Isuledda. We have been here last year already. We will stay for a few days to acclimatize and "arrive" in our holiday.

After a short excursion into the mountains passing by Lula and down again to Cal Gonone we make our way to Arbatax. Highlight is the fantastic seafood at the local pescateria. Clearly one of the highlights on this trip.

After four nights on this big camp site it is time to move on. We pass through Olbia and follow the old coastal road along the east coast. First stop is Riviera dei Pini, a great place for free camping.

While the beaches are great we also read a lot about the mountains and decide to hike the Monte Tonneri. Beautiful mountain scenery in a sparsely populated area welcomes us after the clouds disappear.

Our guide book has a couple of camping sites listed for Capo Sferracavallo. They sound great and are still open. All we want is some sun to warm up from the previous night. So we decide to stay here.

The Mistral is blowing heavily over night. Temperatures drop down to 6 C.  Too cold and we decide to leave the mountains again. On our way down we visit the Grota Su Marmuri. Well worth a stop. Also good for hiking.

Almost everybody we've met so far talked about Costa Rei and how beautiful it is. There is also a small family run camping site. We check it out and fall in love with this part of Sardinia.

In the Chia area we've been last year already and we really liked it a lot. So we have to stop by although the weather is not as good as last year. Amazing how places can change and look different depending on the weather.

After almost five days of good food and wine, camping directly behind the dunes, doing a bit of cycling and relaxing we make a short stop in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, for more good food and wine. ;-)

Our last few days we spend at Capo Malfatano. From here we make a short trip to Porto Pino and the amazing beaches. We also do a bit more cycling before we have to hit the road back to Olbia to catch the ferry.
